How to make the transition to functional programming?

I just wrote the jee advanced 2014 paper. I have counted my marks and its clear to me that i wont be getting computer science in the top five iits. So what other branch can i take so that i can make a transition intothe programming field later? <Im not going to take a drop>

Thanks for A2A. I would like to mention here that if you like CS then do not opt for any other branch. Try IIIT-H, BITS, NSIT, DTU and IIIT-D instead of new IITs but choose branch over college. If you are adamant about the IIT brand, then choose any branch and try to change it to CS after the first sem/year. I don't really know how branch changes work so can't help much there. But it is difficult to get CS after change so plan accordingly.

Take CSE in any of these if you get IIT-B,D,K,M,Kgp,R,BHU,G. Then go for CSE NIT-Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal. Also try IIIT-H/BITS if you can. If you do not get CSE in any of these, you should go for some other circuit branch(Electrical,Electronics,MnC) in the IIT with best facilities for it. Google's next CEO (hopefully) Nikesh Arora was a B.Tech Electrical from IIT (BHU) Varanasi and did MS in Boston in CSE. Branch changes are rare and tough seeing the college atmosphere, newly-earned freedom and faculty quality in in the institute especially first year. I suggested CSE from any of the aforementioned colleges, because all are Tier-I colleges for companies. All big-wigs of the software world like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Epic, Yahoo do come in these colleges for recruitment, provided you are capable of being selected. It does not really matter if you are in IIT-R or BITS-Pilani or IIT-B or IIIT. What matters is your capabilities at the end of your 4/5 years. Not a comprehensive comparison, but look at the number of selections of institutes in Google Summer of Code'14. I know about my institute, students have been selected even from Ceramic Engineering. So it is not a big deal about branches and colleges, provided you are in Tier-I colleges.

Don't worry about your rank.. Get the best you can get in this order whatever is your rank: 1) CS at 5 old IITs 2) CS allied courses (e.g.: Mathematics & Computing) at old IITs 3) CS in new IITs/Core Branches in old IITs if looking for IIT Tag: 4) Any branch in old IITs 5) Any branch in new IITs 6) CS in IIIT-Hyd, NITs(Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Allahabad), BITS-Pilani,  NSIT, DTU 7) IT in IIIT Allahabad 8) IT in NITs, NSIT, DTU(has software engineering i guess) if not looking for IIT Tag: 4) CS in IIIT-Hyd, NITs(Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Allahabad), BITS-Pilani, NSIT, DTU 5) IT in IIIT Allahabad 6) Any branch in old IITs 7) Any branch in new IITs 8) IT in NITs, NSIT, DTU(has software engineering i guess)

Hi Vaasudev. Are you adamant about having the IIT tag? If yes, there are new IITs which are not of actual worth and you can take there. If not, excellent- you can try for IIIT-H, which had a very high cut-off in mains last year. Or you can try for BITS. What is your BITSAT score?

Dont discount IIT BHU (offering admission thru JEE last 40 years) or the newer IITs if you atre really keen about IIT tag and CS
