How should I prepare for a computer science career?

How do I prepare for a career in computer science?

  • Answer:

I'm understanding that you're studying computer science at the moment. The two first bullets are there if it is the case, the others are there in any case. This answer is my humble opinion having worked on the side as a student in this field. Regarding your studies/courses: Get genuinely interested in your courses, go beyond what you are being teached and try to put it into practice as much as you can Work to get the best results you can (even though you think they are not representative, they might be to employers) In any case: Never stop learning about new stuff in your particular field, or in another field. Try to have good side projects (by good projects, I mean projects that get you out of your comfort zone, that teach you things about computers, project management, human nature,... and that are, if possible, in some ways innovative). Notice that I said good instead of many. A lot of unfinished projects won't be a good sign and you probably won't be able to show them off. Talk to people, make friends and discuss about computer science, teach them something and learn from them Keep up to date with the news in your field Try new stuff, experiment Love what you do! :)

If  you have a 4 year college degree no one will ever ask you any questions  about your previous education. That 4 year degree is a minimum  requirement for almost every job in a medium to large business these  days. If you have that you will be fine. If you find that a junior  college is the easy way for you get started on a 4 year degree then that  is OK. Just remember that a 2 year jr college degree is not what you  need - you need the 4 year degree. You could start out at a local jr  college and get a 2 year degree in IT like CIS or CS. Then take those  credits and transfer into a 4 year school and you would have year  3&4 there. Some schools offer what is called a degree completion  program and this is usually a 14-16 month night school for jr college  grads to get their 4 yearBA or BS degrees. So if you did that you would  have 2 years at a jr college and 14 more months at the college or  university. In just over 3 years you would have a 4 year degree. The main  thing I would recomend is that you economize on your education. Attend a  local school if possible and live at home. You don't want to go into  the working world with a bunch of student loans to have to pay off. If your end ambition is a CS degree you need to start taking programming  courses as soon as they are available to you. If you can get those in  High School that is optimal. The reason that you need to take  programming courses is that a huge percentage of people find they don't  like programming and end up having to abandon their CS plans. If you  discover that in HS it will save you time. The thing I always tell people interested in Computer Science is that  they need to discover not if computer science is a good major for them  but if they are the right person for computer science. Programmers are  born and not made. All the computer programming courses in the world  will not make you any good at it if it is not your gifting and calling.  Many eager CS majors take their first few programming courses and  realize that this is not what they expected while others just take to it  like a duck to water. If you find yourself struggling you can always  switch majors into Computer Information Systems (CIS) or another IT area  that does not require programming. Remember that at most 4 year schools  you can change majors out to the end of your second year with very few  credits or time lost. Being able to do well at CS has nothing to do with  intelligence. Many of the people I know that were not successful in  Programming are very successful in other IT fields. Here are just a few of the IT jobs that non-programmers can do: Computer Technician, Service Center Coordinator, Help Desk Staff,  Storage Administrator, Network Administrator, Systems Administrator,  Systems Engineer, Enterprise Administrator, Active Directory  Administrator, Exchange and Messaging Administrator, Backup  Administrator, Disaster Recovery Specialist, Database Administrator,  Computing Security Specialist, Corporate IT Acquisition Specialist and  Data Center Administrator, just to name a few. Best Wishes!
