What is product quality?

  • This is a follow-up question to .

  • Answer:

It depends on who you are as a stakeholder. If you are an end-user then you will likely define quality based on your overall experience. Quality is often measured in relation to competitive products and services. If you are in product management or product design, then you will likely also think in these terms. did a good job with this definition. If you are involved in product production, then quality would be defined based on conformance to specification. Bad quality creates out-of-spec product that has to be re-worked, creating inefficiency. If off-spec product makes it out the door, then major problems will arise. See Deming, Total Quality Management, and ISO 9000. In product development, quality is often defined based on the amount of software bugs and product defects that are included in a release to production. Quality can be improved by integrating verification and validation throughout the product development process, or by implementing procedures and processes that reduce the amount of bugs/defects that are created. Design reviews and testing are often performed to improve product quality. See the V-Model for example.

Product Quality was defined by David A. Garvin of the Harvard Business School as the combination of the following eight dimensions: 1) performance, a product's primary operating characteristics; 2) features, the "bells and whistles" that supplement basic functioning; 3) reliability, the probability of a product malfunctioning within a specified time period (reliability may perhaps better be defined as the probability of a product not malfunctioning); 4) conformity, the degree to which a product's design and operating characteristics meet established standards; 5) durability, a measure of product life which also has an economic component; 6) serviceability, the speed, courtesy, competence, and ease of repair of the product; 7) aesthetics, how a product looks, feels, tastes, sounds or smells; and 8) perceived quality, the image or reputation of a product.

Product quality is ultimately how well the product solves the customers problems, but from an engineering viewpoint it can be reduced to how well it conforms to the specifications and you can then measure variation in conformance.

In product development quality means meeting user requirements that we as the financiers think are important enough to help us meet our objectives. This means that we have to: define our objectives; determine which segment of the user market we want to target; talk to the users and understand their objectives both rational and emotional and understand what they do and how we could help them to do it better; prioritize the requirements and agree which ones awe can do within our timeframe and budget; see
