Do Caltech students often take humanities and foreign language classes at Occidental College?
-
I have heard some negative feedback about Hum/FL classes at Caltech (Caltech being a STEM-focused school) and I was wondering if Oxy classes would be feasible and/or preferable.

Answer:
I earned an undergrad English degree at Caltech without taking, or even really being aware of, a single course at Oxy. The only time I went to Eagle Rock was when the combined Caltech/Occidental orchestra was having rehearsals there -- they trade off each semester as I recall. I heard of a few people going to Oxy for courses, but it was mainly if they wanted to take classes on things we didn't have departments for, like linguistics.

I graduated from Oxy in 2013 with a degree Biology and I didn't come across many CalTech students. That was probably bc I was a STEM major. Most course crossover was actually the other way, Oxy students taking CS/Engineering classes. I would assume if you really want to take a couple Diplomacy and World Affairs classes or the like, it is easy to make it happen.

I believe Brian Eng and I took/audited a Chinese language course at Oxy back when Caltech did not have Chinese as a foreign language, in 2000/2001 thereabouts. At that point, I had finished the two-year Chinese sequence at Pasadena City College. I did not finish the Oxy course due to time constraints: it was morning class (PCC had evening classes) and since I was in my busy senior year. I also audited an international relations course at Oxy, which was a great experience as an audit but would have been an amazing class to take for a grade with full participation had I had the time!.

I'm sorry that I don't know the answer to this question. When I was at Oxy in the 80s, there was an agreement in place with both Caltech and Art Center. I knew Oxy students that took advantage of this opportunity, but never met anyone from either Caltech or Art Center that took classes at Oxy.
