How can I transition from working as a proprietary software developer in finance to working at a non-finance tech company (without setting back my career compared to staying in finance)?

I am considering a position at a small finance company, but I want to keep a career in non-finance tech open. I am certain I would build my skills as a developer substantially, but I would probably not have the chance to manage people.
