I'm a one-person business with a product unlike anything else on the market. How do I get it in front of more eyes in the most cost effective way?

I need to ask my question a different way so you can understand I'm NOT trying to be the NEXT BIG THING. I have produced an updated version of a pet grooming tool that was well liked by pet owners and groomers nearly 30 years ago. No big tool maker filled the need in all these years. There are a multitude of gadgets with lofty claims, but no high quality, durable tools as simple and useful as this was. Nearly everyone who has seen or tried my product buys it because there is nothing else on the market like it. So I did it myself using a small American shop and my own funding. I required green materials whenever possible and fair wages paid to all involved. My compensation will be repaying my out-of-pocket costs AND the satisfaction I will get when my patent is approved and local pet rescue groups benefit from the profits I donate. I am NOT interested in being bought by some company that has different goals. How do I get my product in front of more eyes in the most cost effective way? Is it possible for a not-for-profit company to be taken as a serious competitor? http://rescuerake.com

Answer:
1) Website fix. Find a better one for another single product company and clone it. 2) Videos... Need a punchier voice-over. There is an expected style and you are too low energy in your voice-over. 3) I'd make a video with dialog between a "know little" and a "enthusiastic pitch person" as they brush the dogs and discuss the benefits. Also spend time on the competitive products (some) to show why they do not work as well. The back and forth between the characters is compelling and makes the case more naturally. 4) SHOW SHOW SHOW... the top benefits. For instance: I think you said it was easy to clean. SHOW ME and I will remember/feel the benefit. 5) Consider a side by side and back and forth presentation of yours and the rivals at work. 6) I'm not crazy about the name... But those are hard. You could win with this one but I don't think it is helping. 7) consider licensing to a company that sells in this domain already. 8) use existing customers videos to make a channel of dogs digging getting brushed. Each one ends with your website and offer. Press the cutest ones to Facebook. Rinse and repeat weekly or monthly with winners who get a pair of groomers sent to their local rescue organization as a prize.

Before you proceed to advertise - I highly recommend hiring a web designer. The site looks dated, and first impressions matter. A good impression will encourage people to pass on the name of your product to others even if they don't need the product themselves.

Post a question about it to Quora that includes a link to the site. Advertise it to pet owners/dog lovers on Facebook.

Website (you don't really need a web designer) First, you may wanna fix your website and make it look trustworthy and modern. But even before, you may wanna switch to Opencart from WordPress since it is more useful for an entrepreneur in terms of tracking orders and accounting. Opencart is CMS for building online stores. In both cases, WordPress or OpenCart, you should make your buying steps easier, your customer should be able to buy your product as easy as possible. I'll come back to it. Back to nice looking, it is very easy because themes (templates) will do it. http://Themeforest.net is a must go place for that. Choose a very good-looking theme for around 40 to 60 USD. Before purchasing, go ahead and try its demo to see if it's also user friendly and not confusing. Not all good-looking themes are user friendly. Done! Easy buying steps can be brought by the help of plugins (extensions) and again, http://Themeforest.net is the best place for both WP and OpenCart plugins, but also http://Opencart.com is the biggest market for both Opencart templates and extensions. Note: The theme you will choose is not always capable with the plugin you choose. Discuss it with the plugin's developer. And now, the marketing part Since you believe your product rocks, I bet it does if people are buying for $59.99, you should promote the hell out of it by spending as many hours as possible. Don't know how to? No biggie, study it, learn it. Blessings of internet and globalization. http://Internetbusinessmastery.com teaches it, I like them. Also, Influence by Robert Cialdini is a must read book to know how people buy and why they buy what they buy. And, to know how businesses handle their marketings. The other thing comes in handy is SEO, gotta learn it. I failed one of my projects just because of marketing (and weak SEO), I did very bad. Having the best product helps, but doesn't do the job for you. You gotta work your ... off. Pardon my French, but it's true. And one more thing, Podcast should help you well, make use of it. I'm not as good as I'd want to be in marketing, but please feel free to ask me regarding WP and Opencart, I'll gladly help... for free :)))) Best of luck!

I agree with Anonymous. The website needs to be revamped so when those many, many, many visitors flock to your website, they will see something worth buying and an easy checkout process. Ways to market: pay for a booth at a pet supply expo, reach out to veterenarians and local pet stores, locate the right person at Petco or Petsmart to pitch your product to, explore QVC options. Good luck!

As a web developer, I would definitely think about what your brand identity will be and stick with it. A lot of people first starting out don't see why consistency with branding across all mediums is needed. I have to continually tell my clients that your business needs to stand out, be reconizeable and again, be consistent. I would look into wordpress as a 'do it yourself' or even check my portfolio if you are going to get a web designer in the future. http://www.inkedkoidesigns.ca

I see my market as just like me,,, older and with fond memories of when you could buy a tool that didn't fall apart after a few uses. We are people who say, "I'll pay double for your better mouse trap built in your local shop, but I don't want half the price to be YOUR marketing costs and your PROFITS." How do I cater to *my* buyer when *I* am that buyer and I'm attracted by honesty over glitz?
