How To Access Blocked Websites?

How do Iranians access blocked oversea websites, such as Facebook and Twitter?

• In China, I mainly use two methods — SSH secured tunnels and VPNs — to circumvent the nationwide web censor/filtering system. I visited Iran once in June 2013, before I made the trip I prepared several servers (VPS located on Turkey, China, and U.S.) with VPN and SSH on, hoping that I could still browse the web as usual during my stay in Iran. But at the time I got there I wasn’t able (I was using Irancell and hotel wi-fi) to connect to any of the VPN server I prepared. SSH secured tunnels are never my preference but surprisingly they still worked and that’s what I used eventually. So I’m a little bit curious about how do Iranians access to blocked oversea websites from Iran.

• Answer:

  I use the VPN that was provided to me when I was a student at UBC (Canada) ... it is still active, even though I graduated 2008. Hope they never close my access :).
