I suppose you could say: Software engineer: engineers software Software developer: develops software Software programmer: programs software Application developer: develops applications You might say that applications are processes that accomplish a task, and that software could be an application, library, API, device driver, kernel module, interrupt handler, etc. I don't think many people make a great distinction between the two.
