How do I make a RCA to VGA cable?

Why does VGA to RCA converter create a distorted display?

  • I am trying to connect my PC to television.  The TV only has an RCA input, and the PC only has a VGA output.  When I make the connection using a cable like this (http://imgur.com/BcQaP) I get a garbled, black and white picture. Why does this happen?  And how can I fix it?

  • Answer:

Just because it fits, doesn't mean it works. The VGA cabling standard CAN be broken out (shredded) into RCA or BNC connectors, but it takes five of them to get all the information across - Red, Blue, Green, Hsync and Vsync. The cable you have there is most likely a specialty harness meant for a video game or other proprietary system that uses VGA connectors for other purposes than regular VGA images.  When you connect the yellow composite video lead to your TV, you're only getting one of the five picture leads, giving you a crappy monochrome picture. What you need, to connect a computer to an old-school composite-only TV is a SCAN CONVERTER.  This electronically converts the image from a 5-lead VGA to a single-lead composite RCA, as well as scaling (shrinking) the picture resolution. Unfortunately, a decent Scan Converter can cost more than a cheap LCD tv panel, most of which have VGA inputs on them already. Good luck!
