How to keep our surroundings clean?

How can we make Indians keep their surroundings clean, especially public places?

  • Not one day in my life goes without noticing a passerby spitting on the road or throwing garbage just anywhere. And I believe that only a clean society is a healthy one. I'm looking for ways through which we can make instill a sense of cleanliness in people & thus bring about a change from the people themselves. Thank you.

  • Answer:

LEAD BY EXAMPLE Pick up after your group(friends, colleagues etc.) eventually people will get the idea. If done with sincerity, it will not be awkward either. Stuff wrappers and other scrap in your backpack and empty them in a bin or when u get home. Changing the attitude of the population is a long process. You probably will not see the change yourself, but you indeed are making a difference. (The person from whom I learnt there habits is a stranger who has no clue his actions taught me something)

I would put the suggestions in the following order. Make sure the public places are kept clean. Dirt attracts more dirt. Have sufficient number litter bins and  toilets and boards showing directions for toilets. Put big boards in local and other suitable languages that defaulters will be fined between say Rs. 200 (for say throwing a paper) to Rs 1000 (for peeing). Defecation should attract something more than a fine Put CCTV cameras with boards on them that they are meant to watch youi. Give the contract for fine collection to a private agency at a PROFITABLE commission. (have you seen the entusiasm in toll collection?) Let the people of the agency (in uniform) collect the fines  overtly with an obvious looking boss with a separate uniform. Let some dummy person purposely mess up the place. Let him be hauled and call the media beforehand. Media will do it's job. Make sure the do not play party politics with that. Media should be encouraged  to publicize the above news throughout the country. Start with CP in Delhi. I felt (on my visit to CP 4 days  ago) that they are taking steps 1 and 3 (without any fine just a mild request). But without all the steps and may be more the exercise will be futile. Any publicity about this should not show any politician or aspiring politician in any news or photo. They should just show uniformed enforcers of the law. Presence of politicians creates more problems that it solves.
