What does a project coordinator do?

What are the functions and responsibilities (!) of junior staff members in project management companies, industry, and PM teams (e.g. either of a project coordinator or project assistant, etc.)?

  Project management community in particular in IT is going through a lot of shifts. In earlier times junior level staff are given responsibility to coordinate, maintain and update schedule, metrics etc. No particular list of responsibility though. When the PM himself not available they usually step up and take additional responsibility to run the project. As I said companies are shifting gear towards Agile, a lot of those tasks like schedule management, ms project etc goes away. And many of the typical PM responsibilities are taken care by the team itself, like planning, which once upon a time PM locks himself in a room for a week and accomishes, which is often way off!
