What are the google labs?

What is the relationship between Google, Udacity and Know Labs?

  • http://www.udacity.com/ http://knowlabs.com Are these subsidiaries of Google, or not?  Did Thrun leave Google to start Udacity/Know Labs?

  • Answer:

I don't know how recently this question was asked, but I will give you the details I can based on my research of Udacity.  Know Labs and Udacity are not affiliated with Google.  Udacity appears to be a subsidiary of Know Labs. Speculation: Know Labs may act as the parent or "umbrella" corporation and Udacity is its first child project. Thrun left Stanford to focus on this new platform, but I don't know if he left Google.  He realized the reach of web-based learning while teaching an Artificial Intelligence course for Stanford. I hope that helps.

Elsewhere () I saw Udacity described as a “rebranding” of Know Labs, which fits the fact that as of today, http://knowlabs.com/ redirects to Udacity's site. Thrun previously split his time between Stanford and Google. He apparently gave up his tenured post but is still on the Stanford faculty as a research professor. He is still affiliated with Google and now with Udacity. Thrun is affiliated with Google.  This is purely speculation: he has created an open relationship to promote Udacity and get people excited about computer science and programming, alike.  Well...it's working... :)
