How do I start a career in finance?

I have completed my B. Tech from a NIT in 2014. I want to build a career in the field of finance and economics. Where and how do I start?

  • I am in awe with the concepts of Finance that i have come to know so far, yet I am like a deer caught in the headlight. There are so many options to choose from!!! You could suggest me a book that I should read or a person whom i can contact who would have a better knowledge or an internship that i could take to gain experience. Any help would be appreciated but kindly provide a detailed answer, because even I am aware of stuff like CFA, NCFM, MBA and Masters in Finance etc.

  • Answer:

Thanks for asking the question. This question has been lurking in my mind for quite some time and I did my own research on how to head down the finance path and what I learnt was as strict as it was depressive. The fact that you can only get a certain job only if you have the credentials for it. For most finance jobs, they want some financial knowledge. So, get an MBA, preferably from a (very) reputed college. You'll never get a job in finance or economics if you have a BTech. Secondly from my personal experience, please don't fall in love with the theory or the subjects. Job is very different from  your awe of the concepts. You may like finance, but not the jobs available. I suggest you look into what jobs are there, decide whether that's the kind of job you want to do, and if yes, then pursue an education in finance. I am doing  a job in which I didn't require BTech at all! That's what campus placement gave me!

First decide in field of finance you have interest. Finance has many many sub fields like banking, capital markets, debt market investment bankjng to name a few. In India companies mostly recruit MBA finance students from reputed institutions. You may also choose MSc finance if you only want finance. MBA has a lot of other subjects too.
