I might be moving from NYC (where I was raised) to Gothenburg Sweden, what should I know?

Answer:
The weather can be awful, especially during oct-april. Wet, cold, windy and dark. Just now it is absolutely wonderful, 20 degrees (forget farenheit), sunny and blue skie. Swedes can appear to be shy, hard to reach. We are rather rural, still. But friendly and not dangerous. If You are going to study, use the social structure the Student Union provide. Be careful about talking money, politics or religion. Could cause bad moods if done wrong. Everything is more expensive than in US, except health care and such things,

You will most likely experience some contrast like... Latest opening time of large supermarkets(ICA focus, ICA Maxi) are 23:00 unless you go for seven elevens and such. I think this is quite a sad with a approx. 500 000 pop. In general stores close earlier. On the bright side, you will have much more time for yourself and experience much more nature and green areas. (Must visit 'Slottskogen') Lots of good transport within City ( trams, trains, buses etc.) Don't know if you already moved but good luck http://www.goteborgdaily.se/20-things-to-know-before-moving-to-sweden hehe might help, since I don't know what your age or occupation is. Need more info about you if you have any worries.

And there is no subway. There are trams. But otherwise it is a great little City. Friendly and by the sea. A lot more easy going than for instance Stockholm.

My list:If you are a nature lover, the islands around Goteborg (sorry, I reset my tablet and the extra letters are gone!) are wonderful to visit!Healthy food is easy to get, some people find Swedish food bland, but you will have lots of other options around. It is definitely more expensive, but you get more for your taxes, so it works out. I find public transport to be much better than anywhere in the US.As others have said, religion and politics are taboo-at least until you are close to people.Speaking of whichâ¦.Swedes may come off as cold or aloof. They take their time getting to know people (except when drunk), but they are, in my experience, really lovely people if you put the time into building relationships. And, about getting drunkâ¦..alcohol is very expensive compared to the US. Particularly wineâ¦..only relevant if you drink.Winterâ¦.er, daylight for about four/five hours? It gets hard. Summer-I need an eye mask to sleep. Not dark til 11pm, starts to lighten up about 3 am. The only negative I have experienced dealing with Swedes is that a very small minority can be anti-immigrant. You might want to be aware of this for some conversations.English is common, but learning Swedish will help, and your efforts will be appreciated.Sweden is a lovely place. Be sure to visit neighboring Scandinavian countries as well, and get used to Bellman jokes. Good luck with your move.
