Describe the next generation of design professionals?

What are the best methods to promote very new products?

  • My company sells products which are in new or nascent markets.  Most people don't really know or understand our products until we describe them directly. For example - Body Language and Deception detection (for negotiation, sales and police training) - Time / Life hacking (process, productivity and automation specialist) When explained, I've found most people say "oh wow cool product" but it is harder to find and educate customers compared to more well known products, like web design, that people already know they need. What are good lead generation, marketing, and sales approaches for new products?

  • Answer:

Convincing people they need your product is hard and expensive.  What you want to focus on is finding the people who already know they have a pain and want to fix it.  In sales lingo, you want people with an active pain.  You want to avoid latent pain, where they have the pain but don't know they have it or it isn't a priority.  And if they just don't have pain at all then you should reconsider your approach. Assuming you already have a firm grasp on the customer pain point your products solve, your first step is to come up with an idea of who that type of person might be.  Try to define this group of people as clearly as you can using any identifiable traits.  Maybe age, income levels, wages, interests, etc.  Once you have a hypothesis on who might have an active need, test it against people who fit that description.  If you're wrong, adjust and try again.  Eventually you'll hone your target or find that there isn't a definable market.  Either way, you'll come out with a huge piece of data. Once you have your target demographic defined then go where that group is concentrated or easily reached and market your product.  This might be through facebook, blogging, search advertising, trade shows, email marketing, cold calling, etc.  It really depends on which channel you think is easiest for you to hit a concentration of your target demographic and where the costs are sufficiently less then how much you'll make from those customers. As you progress, be sure to constantly be refining based on feedback you solicit.  Why are they buying?  Do more of that.  Why are they not buying?  Adjust.

Is your product tech? Don’t assume everyone knows how to mount and port files, offer some guidance, make it accessible. High quality, well edited product demonstration and instruction goes a long way with many people, even those who know what they are doing but like shortcuts. The only things people have bought that they didn’t want to be easy were Rubik’s Cubes and 10,000 piece puzzles. Unless you are selling those, help them along! Dash, a startup company founded in 2012. released a video that showcases its connected car platform that turns any car into a “smart” car. The video does a great job showcasing how to use their product, especially since it is technology based and makes it much easier to understand than having to read long form text.

Writing a 5-10 page report - also known as a buzz piece - is a sure-fire way to generate some solid leads. Write a report that's at the heart of what you are offering and what your prospects need: For example, you could write a report on the following topics: How to protect yourself from the five behaviors that are designed to deceive you?' for your police training. Master body language to master any negotiation situation Are these beliefs sabotaging your productivity? Then send the report to your prospects and customers. You'll come off as an expert. Then follow-through with them after a couple of days. You could also consider writing a press release announcing the publication of your report. If it's picked up by a major publication, ka-ching all your way.
