What is the best program for a personal portfolio?

What would be some good things to work on for a portfolio for an application to an animation program at a university?

  • I am currently a Computer Science major, planning to apply to the CS: Animation emphasis in April of 2015. The application process can be simplified to "include key images and animation sequences which highlight your strengths." I've only just started teaching myself Blender, but I know I can make a lot of progress in the next thirteen months. I'm trying to plan out now the different skills I would like to acquire to make an impressive portfolio. For example, I think that rigging would be a good, advanced technique to learn.

  • Answer:

I would say 2 things: 1) Show technical proficiency, such as rigging, walk cycles, secondary animations, cloth/fire/water, etc. 2) Create an animation with a really good story and make sure it conveys deep emotions.

For most animation programs, you need to show drawings; traditional drawings on paper, drawn from observation. You should start keeping a sketchbook. Draw people and animals in expressive poses, and environments as well. It is good to learn rigging, but they are probably more interested in your drawings because animation is an art more than a science.
