What do you think of the idea of applying for a second MBA program (Magic 7 or at least top 10) after graduation from the first MBA program (second or third tier MBA program) followed by 3-5 years of working experience?

I am a young MBA candidate now going to Lubin School of Business, Pace University in New York City. I know MBA program isn't all about learning and studying, it's also about networking, about meeting new excellent peer students and classmates in that MBA program. So not going to a top MBA program to some extend means not having the opportunity to meet the most excellent or the smartest people from whom you can learn a lot of precious experience and things that help you in the future. And I always hear about how great barriers are in front of most of those non-top MBA graduates especially when it comes to demanding industries such as top investment banking, top consulting or even PE and VC. I even heard that those industries almost do not hire graduates from non-top MBA programs. In this sense, is it necessary to apply for a top MBA program in the following years even though I already have one MBA degree in order to be more career-competitive? Thanx very much for answering in advance!

Answer:
It's unlikely that you'll be admitted. Some schools (Tuck, for instance), explicitly say so in their FAQs: "Tuck will not accept applications from individuals who have already earned an MBA."

I understand your thinking as I nearly went straight for an MBA after studying business for undergrad. The difficulty you will have is expaining why you need another MBA. Most schools will ding you outright for having the first MBA anyway so you wont get the chance. What you might want to consider is using the next 5 years to really understand what you want to do with your life. Take a couple of CFA exams, try out a few different positions. Then once you know, go take a top ranked masters in that field. The right masters programs will give you access to great employers and give you a deep level of expertise in a particular field which can be a real advantage in a competitive job market. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you have probably closed the door on many top ranked MBA programs by already having one. I'm not saying that there is no chance at all but... you know. You shouldn't feel however that you can't have an amazing career. The MBA helps for a few years after school. Beyond that, you better have actually achieved something. If you do a great job and understand how to get others to do a great job then the sky is your limit. I'll let you into a little secret about top business schools. They do NOT turn people into great thinkers and leaders. What they do, is admit people who are already those things. Yes they enhance natural talent and help you make connections socially and intellectually that you otherwise wouldn't but they do that for people who are (for the most part) already awesome. As someone who sits on the other side of the hiring equation now. I would take two people with a proven ability to consistently do great work over 10 people with fancy bits of paper. I hope this answer helps.

Don't bother. Advance your career. Top MBA programs don't want repeat MBA's.There are plenty of degrees you can leverage to get into a top MBA program (Engineering, MD). A weaker MBA is not one of them.
