What exactly does an intern for a company do?

If I work as a summer intern at a start up, will there be less chance of getting a job at a big company than there would be after doing internship at a big company in the first place?

  • I got a summer internship offer from a start up. But I am confused whether to Accept the offer letter or wait for some big company? I want to know if next time (for internship or job )it will be difficult to get into a big company if I don't intern at a big company. In future I am looking forward to work at a big company for various reasons, I just want to know whether it will be difficult to get into one afterwords.

  • Answer:

You will have less chance Getting internship at a big company With zero internship experience anywhere. Any relevant and transferable Experience anywhere including at A Start-up trumps zero experience, almost always.

Working at a start-up has its perks. The short answer is no, having work experience at a start-up does not put you at a disadvantage when applying for an internship at a larger company, in my honest opinion. Just because the company isn't a "big name" tech company doesn't mean you should count it out. All companies started somewhere - at one point, Facebook was just "some social network", but now, it's a highly regarded place to work. The same is true about a lot of other companies. If you are choosing between taking or not taking the offer at all, I would say to take it. The experience will be super valuable. Having experience from a start-up makes you valuable. In a lot of situations, it means you've been able to work without some of the infrastructure and tools that larger companies have the luxury of using. Additionally, getting a job at a start-up or smaller company isn't necessarily easier. If anything, you have to prove that you're valuable enough to warrant this smaller company investing time and funds into your work. While I've worked at larger companies, I can safely say that I really wish I had tried working at some smaller companies, especially because they offer a different experience.
