What are the way to expose our business to public?

What is the best way to learn the business side of business intelligence from a computer engineering PhD background?

  • I am a recent PhD in computer engineering, I have less than 2 years experience in database programming and software development. I am familiar with SQL and R. Recently, I am becoming fascinated about business analytics and want to make a career change to BI data analyst. I've had several interviews and found myself lack of the business knowledge to be a good BI analyst. What would be the best resource/way to learn the business side of BI? For instance, they asked my opinion about ROI, business model, metrics....but I am not familiar with these concepts. I've read "Case in Point" but found that it is not enough. Any suggestions? Thank you!

  • Answer:

The only way to learn business lingo is to actually work in a company and get involved in management discussions. I know this sounds like a catch-22 but there's hope. You can easily get a job in your field, doing software engineering and then slowly get involved in business talk. Some companies will have no problem if you ask to be part of strategy meetings or if you ask a director to coach you and teach you. Honestly no book can ever tech you that. I speak from experience :)
