What is the most informative I.T. Forum?

What is the most popular programming language for forum software?

  • I've heard PHP is on the fall. But how come over 80% of Server-side websites are run with PHP? http://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/programming_language/all Does it look different for forum softwares? The reason I'm asking is I'm an admin for a forum. This forum uses SMF (Simple Machines Forum) that is full with PHP files. I don't want to learn PHP because it will be outdated soon. I thought of learning Java, Python or Ruby. But do state of the art Forum Software exist that run on those languages?

    Basically the popularity of PHP is due to it's low learning curve. It's easy to write and someone with no programming/server admin knowledge can throw a Wordpress/vBulleting up on a shared host and be done with it. If you're a forum admin stick with PHP for now, you really don't need to learn a more advanced language until well you need to. Basically you start building out in Java, etc once your current PHP solution either doesn't scale or you need functionality not achieved by PHP, i.e. machine learning, heavy data processing, etc. Most don't apply to forums, except scale. For scaling I would say Node.js is your better choice, as forums are pretty simple pieces of software, and node is perfect for those types of projects. Not to mention JS also helps on the front end

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software While many people say python is better than php, and php is on its way out, I don't see it being gone any time soon.  If it goes away, it will fade slowly, like COBOL.  There's just too much php out there for it to disappear any time soon.
