What are some of Juliet's character traits?

Why do so many people discount character and integrity as important traits for their elected officials?

  • On both sides of the aisle voters seem to ignore traits regarding character - Clinton not only having an affair in the same house as where he lived with his wife, but with a much younger employee to boot. Gingrich having affairs while his wife was ill, etc. Many instances of tax evasion and fraud on both sides, outright lies, etc. Why don't we seem to care about these ethical and character traits?

    I think that, deep down, we realize these people are in a world detached from us.   The old joke:   We all know Van Gogh was a genius, but we wouldn't want him as our neighbor. We like what they say, what they say they stand for, what they do (publicly) -- but when the "real" them comes out, we click the importance down a few notches  (usually) because they are symbols. We don't stop going to movies when we find out our favorite stars are messing around -- we simply dissociate those events from the purpose of our visit to the theater. There are of course limits... Winona Ryder had a 5 year "hiatus" after being convicted of shoplifting... Christian Slater, etc... I think we tend to draw the line at getting arrested (and convicted).  Things rapidly fall apart for celebrities and politicians after conviction.

Actually most people care deeply about these issues, unfortunately they generally only care when the offender is someone they oppose. If the offender is "one of their own" they tend to overlook the offence. Your example of Bill Clinton is the classic example, the man carried on an affair in the Oval Office with his wife down the hall, then lied right to the face of the American public committing perjury. Yet somehow the vast majority of Democrats worship the man , even to the point of touting his wife as America's next President because you get a 2 for 1 deal, Bill and Hillary in the Oval Office. In that scenario, one has to ask......will Hillary ensure it's an all male staff at the Whitehouse?
