Can you become an animator with a computer science degree?

Can one become an expert in machine learning without having a degree in computer science, and be recognized (by institutions and companies) as such?

  • I study Mechanical Engineering and would choose some subjects in CS & Machine Learning, but the Degree label is Mech.Eng.

  • Answer:

Depends what you refer to as an expert. One type of expert is a Ph.D. graduate in CS who did his research in the field of ML. Another type of expert is a data scientist with lots of experience in applying ML in order to solve different problems. You can definitely be the second type of expert. One way to start is to have your university projects (or even better, a M.Sc. thesis) use advanced ML methods in mechanical engineering. I'm sure you can find use cases for these (robotics, optimal control, materials etc.)

Other answers

ML requires concepts derived from Mathematics and Physics (Probability and Statistics, Graph Theory, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Regression etc.) Even Computer Science just borrows things from Mathematics and Physics.
