What should be the 'subdirectory' page on my domain - my 'About' page or my blog?

  • I've recently installed WordPress on a host for my blog, and was convinced by a developer friend to use WordPress for my personal landing page also. I agree this is the best solution for a noob like myself. However, what is the best setup? A: 'About' page at http://www.name.com, and blog at http://www.name.com/blog B: Blog at http://www.name.com, and 'About' page at http://www.name.com/about C: Something I haven't thought of!

    It depends on who you are. Do people come to learn about you as a person? Or do they come to learn about what you have to say? If you are a public figure you probably fall into the first category, and should have your about page as the landing page. If you are a tech blogger, then people care about the content more than the author, so you should have the blog as the landing page.

Actually, Wordpress isn't just a blog. It's a full content management system. You can have About page AND the blog on the same Wordpress installation. So, you could have http://www.name.com where you put stuff about you (a page about you) and have the blog in a subsection of the site. It depends also on the theme you have. As an example, look here at this Wordpress theme: http://thearchitect.wpmu3.layeredpixels.com/ (on sale here http://themeforest.net/item/the-architect-wp-edition/full_screen_preview/113414 ) See News? There you can have the blog posts...but the whole site is built on http://Wordpress.org software. So, instead Home (which is a page) you can have your About page. Instead News (which is also a page) you can have your Blog (where you can put your regular posts - so inside page Blog you will have your posts).
