Best way to ship books from India to US?

What are the rates for sending book parcels from India to Europe? Is this the cheapest way to ship a box of books (10kg), even if it's slow?

  • Book parcels (or book post) seem to have been canceled and replaced by "bulk bag" shipment, which also seems to have been canceled. When time is not of the essence and price is, what is the best option for international shipping of 11kg of books from India to Switzerland?

  • Answer:

So, since I asked this question I have managed to gather more information. "Book Parcel" does not seem to exist anymore. What would replace it for this kind of situation is "Bulk Bag" -- see the FAQ here: http://www.indiapost.gov.in/Foreign_Postage_FAQs.htm In short: 350 Rs for the first 5kg, then 100 Rs/kg upto 30kg (by sea).

You can try http://Jiffie.in. It is a marketplace for all express shipments to over 200 countries. The rates are very attractive (typically about 40% discount of market rates) and deliveries happen within 4 days. You can choose between FedEx\TNT\UPS\DHL to make the shipment.India Post would be a great and recommended option, if this was a small package weighing less than 500 grams, where there will be a substantial difference. However, since you are saying that bunch of books, the difference in price will be too less, India Post being on the lower side and WNX is also an express shipment option only. There are other freight-forwarded who ship by sea (which IndiaPost and http://Jiffie.in does not), where you can get the cheapest rates, since time is not of essence.

Fedex/DHL/UPS/RoyalMail are all available for shipping to Switzerland from India. I have personally used http://www.fedex.com/in to get estimates of shipping rates and transit times. I did a quick quote for 10kgs/Zurich/Economy and it costed roughly US$ 160 Hope this helps. Other Indian services include: http://www.indiapost.gov.in (this would be the cheapest option. And should cost no more than $50 in my estimates.) http://www.bluedart.com http://www.dtdc.in http://www.firstflight.net

Your FAQ doesn't indicate time Bulk Bag would take by sea... Any idea? Last time I was in India (2008), I had my books sent in several packs of cotton just lower than 2kg with open sides stitched to show they were books.  Around major cities'  main post office, guys offer this type of help and come with you to discuss la prise en charge by the post officer and probably hand out some baksheesh. Had been told these 5 or 6 parcels  could be left lying around for weeks at the post office or at the airport. As a matter of fact, I received them all within 2 to 3 weeks which was a nice surprise. May have been a bit more expensive but with two IT bible books you cover the cost of shipping the remainders. It did tho'  take 1/2 a day to get over and done with.
