How to lock a drive or folder for free?

What is the best way to lock a folder on an external hard drive?

  • I am storing a file on an external hard drive for two years. It will be in use during that time, so I'd like to put a password on the folder. Is this possible? (This is on Windows 7)

  • Answer:

I think this would be a good use case for directory-level encryption. In OS X this is easily done using an encrypted disk image (you can create one in Disk Utility [1]). If you're using Windows or Linux I think you can achieve similar results with TrueCrypt [2]. [1] http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1578 [2] http://www.truecrypt.org/
