Multiple domains for similar content?

How should I handle legitimate duplicated content on cross domains?

  • Lets say i own e-commerce sites for different markets and I dont want the big Panda to eat my sites :)? I know you can useĀ  cross-domain rel="canonical" link element. But do really not just both sites get worse ranks?

  • Answer:

You should diversify your content. rel="canonical" is not intended to solve duplicate content issues. It is intended to say, "I know I have 3 pages that are exactly the same, please rank this one". In your case that is not at all what you want to do. Simply put, the best solution is to write some fresh new content for each site. DO NOT use canonical links they are not for this type of issue.

Jordan is exactly right. Many of our ecommerce clients pick up their product descriptions from their vendor's sites. Almost every ecommerce site that does this is guaranteed a Panda slap. The best way to get around this is to write your own unique product descriptions or create expert reviews as the descriptions. If you must include technical specs, you could use an image instead of repeating those details. An easy way to see just how duplicated a specific block of content is, is to highlight the text using Chrome and then right click and select search in google. This will show you all instances of the content being used. It can be a real eye opener to many ecommerce site owners.
