How can I save a copy of my printed docs on my computer?

What are some document creators that integrate text, equations, and drawing?

  • Recently I've been making some quick documents that include text, LaTeX, hand drawn figures, and computer-generated plots. These are short efforts, e.g. ten minutes and one or two pages. They don't need to be refined or beautiful. Right now I'm using LaTeX, but it's a bit slow to open a separate application, draw something, save it, and import it to my LaTeX file. I'd like to go along typing text, entering equations, and then when I want a picture just activating drawing mode and drawing the picture into the document. Basically, I want something kind of like LyX but augmented with a tool to make fast drawings built right in, or even like the Quora answer box, but with a tool added for creating drawings instead of just pasting them. I'm optimizing for creating documents quickly. Google docs is kind of like this, but entering equation mode is awkward and I the equation editor isn't that great. What are some alternatives? (Another possibility would be to have two apps open on adjacent browser tabs, a word processor that lets me write text and LaTeX and a drawing app that lets me make quick drawings and plots, copy them, and paste them into the text.)

As noted in the question comments I don't think there's a perfect solution but I can offer a decent approach that has served me well.  All of this assumes that we're interested in figures and not plots. Inkscape provides a feature-rich, relatively intuitive means of generating figures which can then be included into LaTeX's picture environment where text, formulas, and arrows can be overlaid.  One particularly useful feature of Inkscape is the Export Selection option, which quickly produces a LaTeX-ready EPS from any selection and allows the program to serve as a clipboard. Given enough screen space for three windows (LaTeX source, compiled LaTeX output, and Inkscape) one can rapidly access Inkscape, produce the desired figure, export it to the working directory, and then compile it into the output, all while maintaining a reasonable workflow.
