What are the career options for a person after doing an MBA from IIM A/B/C/L/XLRI, who has 3+ years of experience in IT? Can he change his field to banking/corporate finance/marketing/business consulting?
-
Or while looking at his/her experience in IT for 3 years, will he be offered only PM or consultant jobs in IT companies? even if he gets a placement in Banking or finance company, what are the challenges ahead of him/her compared to a fresher? And what salary can he expect after getting out from a BSchool?
-
Answer:
Depends on his UG pedigree, CGPA at BSchool , Position of Responsibility (read President / placerep), networking ability (which can also mean licking the right person's a**) and a host of other factors which can be conveniently clubbed as 'soft skills'. I have seen people with 3 years of IT workex moving to day zero strategy consults, good Gen Man company (ABG), some of the leading FMCG/FMCD/Telecom firms and even in rare cases investment banks ( candidate with CFA and incredibly good luck !! ) . But these candidates who get above mentioned roles are a small minority among all students with 3+ yrs IT workex. Source - Own observation and friends in top 5 BSchools

Banking after MBA from IIMThe problem with moving to a new industry is your work experience may or maynot be considered. Freshers were typically offered Management Trainees where as work ex guys will be offered Manager position after MBA from IIMs/XLRI. The chances of you moving to Finance are pretty good. Challenges are more or less same whether you are a fresher or having work experience, while entering banking sector. Banks recruit students from IIMs and other top B-schools primarily for their wholesale banking division and treasury. (Typical Org structure of bank is available at ).Wholesale Banking is split across commercial banking that deals with day to day operations for corporates, SME division deal with financial requirements of the companies having turnover upto 150cr~200 cr and large corporates divisions deal with companies having turnover more than 200cr. There is a treasury front end team that deals with structuring forex products to clients and a separate government banking division that deals with government clients. Special teams handling restructuring also forms part of the wholesale banking. Though Risk is not part of the wholesale banking, IIM grads will also be placed in them.MBA graduates from IIMs and other other top B-schools will be placed in any of the above division based on candidates interest and other parameters like availability of vacancies and kind of profiles agreed upon at the time of campus recruitment. Those who join business groups like SME or corporate banking will either be kept in credit or relationship side or in some cases there will be a mix of both of them. The structure keeps changing. Following are the list of banks having mix roles:ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, HDFC, All PSU Banks have mix roles in initial stageFollowing are the banks which have separate credit and relationship teams:Axis Bank, Kotak, Stan C, HSBC, Citi, majority of NBFCsAs details of responsibilities are going to take lot of space I am not including responsibilities section in this answer.
