What does it mean to be a marketing specialist?

What are the biggest challenges as a social media/digital marketing specialist?

  • People think they can hire secretaries to handle their social media pages and think that this, alone, is what social media marketing covers. What are your thoughts? I am interested to know about the challenges social media marketing/digital marketing/community managers are facing around the world. With our line of work, seems like only a few know about what we actually do and why it is important for a specialist to do this instead of secretaries or interns without prior social media marketing knowledge.

    Life is a never ending challenge. Now, to the question. To me the biggest challenge for marketers is handling an enormous amount of information. This is not completely unique and can be applied to many spheres, but those who work online face a lot of information. I mean, A LOT. And the facts are changing, and you need to analyze and apply them right away. It is stressful and overwhelming. I think sometimes people who are deeply involved into social cannot understand that their stress comes from this inability to digest everything that falls on our heads when we plug in.

Some of the major challenges of social media consultants as far as I can see it include: 1) Highly inconsistent job definition - even among each other, digital marketer can't agree what their responsibilities are 2) Inability to articulate a sound and profound financial benefit to the business 3) Lack of skills to help businesses understand the real impact and business benefit in a way an executive can make an educated decision. 4) Overestimating their own skills 5) Lack of experience bringing digital marketing in alignment with an overall go to market strategy 6) Lack of methods, models and frameworks to perform their jobs. The list can be easily extended to 20-50 more items. I believe only time will bring a cohesive engagement model into that new industry segment.
