What is the best restaurant in Hoi An Vietnam?

Is there Peranakan-Chinese people in Vietnam (especially the Central area of Vietnam, from Hoi An to Hue City)?

  • I visited Peranakan museum in Singapore (it's more of a Peranakan-Chinese museum) and found a lot of similarities between the Peranakan Chinese culture and culture of the central Vietnam culture (particularly from Hoi An to Hue, where I'm originally from). The tour guide mentioned there are Peranakan people in these are of Vietnam. But doing only googling doesn't give me any specific evidence. Did Peranakan culture actually happen in central Vietnam? And how did it begin?

  • Answer:

As one of the Peranakan myself, it means descendents or children (anak=child) of the male overseas Chinese in the beginning often marrying local women, so of mixed blood, but after that their children mostly marrying other people of Chinese descent, in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.  An amalgamation of cultures, reflected in customs, jewelry, dress, food, but many still adhering to old Chinese customs although most wouldn't be able to speak Chinese or its dialects anymore.  These people often would be the go-betweens between the colonizers and the indigenous people, not really loved by these indigenous people because they supposedly got rich by exploiting this position. People from China coming later to these territories known as "new guests" xin ke 新客 speak Chinese among themselves and consider themselves to the more pure Chinese than the Peranakan since they didn't intermarry, the Peranakan consider the xinke to be rude, ill mannered, not well adjusted. Although I never visited Vietnam before, I know historically for centuries there has been Chinese people moving to Vietnam (and other Indo-Chinese countries), called the hoa people 華人 meaning Chinese people see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoa_people You might like to follow the link to the Wikipedia entry.
