How to build a phone?

How can I build a device that when tapped will communicate with an app already downloaded to a smart phone?

  • For example, imagine a "checkin" pad at a retail store that enters a user in a contest. Assume the user has already downloaded the retailer's app to their phone.  Upon tapping / waving the phone over the pad, the user signals consent and their name and contact info is automatically entered into the contest.  This is the modern version of dropping your business card in the bowl. What would need to be in the pad to enable this type of behavior? I don't think beacons (BLE) will work since their location awareness is not refined enough.  Perhaps NFC would be a good option for Android (not sure about iPhones)?  Assume the retailer is not comfortable with bombarding everyone that walks in the door and instead wants only those that perform a physical action in the store (eg, tapping a pad) to be considered for the contest or to receive a notice about the contest. Thoughts? Thanks!

Bluetooth is your best option. Or a QR code.
