How can I apply for a job in advance?

How far in advance can I search for a UX design job in NYC?

  • Moving to NY in late June/early July and want to know when I should start looking for a job.

  • Answer:

In advance of what?  I think it takes 4-6 months to get a job in NYC, assuming you have a competitive resume and contacts.  I'm thinking of slow moving, corporate hiring.  If you want to move here and take a job like bartender, store clerk etc. I'd imagine it would take a week or two

Plan on flying in for interviews on short notice and have an address you can work out of. Look like a local candidate or you're about 1/10 as likely to get a call back; unless you are working through a recruiter. Be 100% honest with them. UX is hyper competitive. It's either oversupplied (UI/UX) or it's highly specialized (research, interaction, strategy). Either way, getting a foot in the door is hard. If you have a really hot portfolio, that'll cover a multitude of sins, but it's also a fairly subjective measure of talent compared to process & experience. I'd talk to someone like VitaminTalent or Aquent and let them slot you into a contract role for your first gig. It'll close faster and pay pretty well while giving you time to adjust.
