The app icon should easily convey what the app is about. It should not confuse the user about the use of the app. It is very useful to use branding colors, some element from logo or an object related to the subject. For example - If the app is related to shopping, a "shopping cart" icon can be used. The design of app icon should not be cluttered. The icon is used in many sizes. If it is cluttered, it will loose it's readability. So keep it simple and clean. Also, the style of the graphics should be different depending on the target audience. For example - The icon can be designed in 3D style with bright colors for subject like gaming. If the app is going to be used by kids, then the graphic style can be sketchy, 'cartoon'ish, etc. Another reason to make the app icon attractive and intuitive is, user would have many apps installed on my phone.
