What are some tips for finding an entry-level job (with little to no experience) in the biotech industry?
-
Specifically in California. The biomedical industry is supposed to be booming in the next few years but it still seems difficult to find a job. Any tips?

Answer:
Well as an unemployed graduate student, let me tell you all about it!!! Assuming that you have a bioscience related degree, the market is extremely saturated with job candidates with job experience. California particularly has this problem since many of the major companies have not been doing well and the bioenergy industry hasn't fully gotten up to speed, as a result, the biotech hubs in San Diego and the Bay Area are saturated with recently unemployed but highly skilled workers. Thus, getting a job in the industry with little to no experience is probably a bit difficult. However, if you're looking to get experience without going back to school, I highly recommend being a researching assistant or lab technician at the nearby University. Most of these positions are 1-2 year contract positions that don't require much background but highly emphasizes and develops particular skills. Skills that real companies are likely looking for. They tend to be 9-5 and you'll be nearby any startups and spin-offs when they happen so your job network will be fairly promising. Most jobs are filled by networking (75%) so the more effort you put into targeted, strategic networking, the more likely you will be to know who has the problem you can solve. No company hires unless they have a problem (even if it is just a need for warm bodies!) that they can't solve with the people they are already paying.

Look for biotech companies, then check their website career section to see what types of entry level jobs they offer, then check into taking colleges courses that would give you a leg up for getting those jobs. Many times employers will hire entry level people who are already taking courses in line with their industry. Here is one to get you started http://jobs.medtronic.com/
