What's the difference between a Graphic Designer and a Sr. Graphic Designer?

What's the biggest difference between a Jr. and Sr. UX Designer?

  • Given that both designers are familiar with the UX process. Also, if it's experience that separates the two, how does that difference show in the process and/or work place?

  • Answer:

Normally, these two are distinguished by years of experience and ability to run with projects independently. Here's a ballpark distinction: Jr: 1-2 years of experience Managed by a senior designer to learn more standards, how offices/teams/processes work Not final approver for designs Sr. 3- years of experience More likely to manage themselves/their work/their projects Sometimes approves designs (based on company structure)   But wait! There are a few more factors... - Do they work for a big company or a small company? Small companies tend to have more inflated titles and less hierarchies. So a Jr. Designer at Microsoft may be considered a Sr. Designer at a small startup. - How big is the design team? Same idea as the above one. The bigger the design team, the more likely there will be title hierarchies. If there's only one designer, that designer will almost definitely not be a Jr. Designer. Hope this helps! The UX field is growing and changing so titles and roles tend to vary significantly among companies based on size, product and organizational structure.

In addition to what's been said, the experience plays a crucial role in the following: 1. Championing an idea and/or user need. This is particularly important if the UX understanding in the company is not mature (i.e. UX seen as a "make it pretty" phase after all decisions have been made) 2. System understanding. While the familiarity with UX processes for basic stuff (knowing how to wireframe, affinity diagram, IA) are the same, a senior person would have a better understanding on how to use UX approach to affect decisions on higher level and use design thinking to solve business problems/create business opportunity. 3. Leadership/evangelizing. Implicit in both of the above, a senior UX designer would show leadership in getting the whole product team to be user centric, not just the design team.

I think it's the same difference as in other design disciplines: a senior designer can tackle design problems by himself following creative direction; a junior designer needs coaching to do so.

As someone with 18 years experience (no really) I'd say the biggest difference is an understanding of what UX actually is. Junior UX folks start by treating UX and UI as more or less the same thing. This is also common amongst clients. Often the visual design and interface are even called 'the UX'. When given a UX problem a junior UX person will start by sketching the interface. Also junior UX will tend to use techniques like personas without really understanding why they are using them and how they feed into the project. A personas can often be created, put on the wall, and then they make no or little difference to the end product. A Senior UX will have a much better understanding of the full spectrum of UX and understand the value of User Research and how it differs from User Testing. They will spend time getting to know the whole problem and when they start to sketch it will be of the the whole problem first rather than any detail. For example if I see a job advert requesting that I know 'The Adobe Suite' I tend to assume it is for a more junior role because I only very rarely use Photoshop and that's normally to help put together images for presentations or for personal projects. But roles differ and some folks find themselves having to do a bit of everything. In general the more senior, the further you get away from UI centric thinking and can product better UI because of it.
