I am currently living in Norway for my computer science studies and find the cost of living very high. As I would like to live there, what is the average salary for a junior software developer?

Answer:
It depends on your education-level, your experience, what kind of software-developer you are, and what business you work for. Fresh out of your studies with a bachelors degree or similar, working in a "simple" end of software-development such as creating websites by the help of PHP or similar tools: perhaps 30K-35K/month (about $5500/month) A decade of experience, and a similar type of job as above: 40K - 45K/month (about $6700/month) High-salary line of work such as finance or oil: Add 10K - 15K (about $2000/month) to the above estimates. Consultant with specialized skills and several years of experience, potentially 75K+/month. ($12000/month) (over 100K/month is rare, but not unheard of) These are pre-tax amounts. Expect to pay about 1/3rd of your salary in taxes, or somewhat less than that if you've got children or other dependants or a significant mortgage. Still, any professional software-developer will tend to have at least 25K/month to live for after having paid taxes. This is more than double what a student gets to live for in Norway, so is more than sufficient for a reasonable standard of living, even after considering the high cost of living in Norway.

With Junior SW developer I guess you have at least a bachelor or a master degree, but little experience. Master degree engineers with no experience average close to 500 kNOK in the private sector, with government employees averaging 430 kNOK according to Tekna, the major employee union for engineers.

If you have a masters degree, expect 480k. If you have a bachelor the starting salary would be around 430k You should expect a gradual increase the first years as you prove your worth, and then it will more or less even out. An experienced senior developer earn about 50% more than a beginner. Salaries vary a bit, salaries in Oslo are about 10-15% higher than the rest of the country
