What kind of industry is google in?

In Japan, what kind of companies do highly talented web engineers, who learned computer science at top-rated universities for instance, want to work for?

• Is it for Google, Hatena, Live door, or Rakuten a kind of Web company? Or Sier like CTC or NRI? Or game industry?

  Google, Twitter, and Facebook are top tech companies but their Japanese offices are not centered around Engineering. They're more like satellite offices for marketing and growing user adoption. Same goes for hot startups like Netflix, Airbnb, and Uber. You'll get to work for a brand name but may not do any work that has meaningful impact.In comparison, I'd say http://Amazon.jpis the most attractive destination for talented Engineer graduates in Japan. Particularly because Japan is such an unique country in terms of e-commerce that Amazon Japan probably owns some high impact Engineering efforts independent from Seattle. I doubt new engineers get to work on the main site, but their main attractiveness is the ability to participate in smaller, startup like projects.NHN(Line) is another big platform where you'll probably get to work on meaningful projects that impacts the Japanese population.If you like games, SONY Computer Entertainment maintains one of the most used gaming network in Japan and abroad. You'll be part of the core team in Japan, so work should be very meaningful.I've seen a couple Tokyo University graduates join our company Bandai Namco to do research on 3d modelling and animation technologies. The salary can't really compete with the aforementioned companies, though.The good thing about any of the above companies is that their brand will give you an edge should you choose to work overseas at some point. I've seen some top grads come to GREE and DeNA to work on social games, but I don't recommend this path because it's a stagnating field. You'll risk ending up with many failed games on your resume that nobody can check out. Their web services aren't really thriving either. I don't know much about Rakuten but their service and management look like a mess from the outside. Some of Cyberagent's services are dominant in Japan, like Ameba Blog. Might be cool if you're interested in this area. I'm quite pessimistic about Japanese Web based Startups. I just don't think many web startups in Japan have the raw ability to compete with SF based companies. Only niche services like http://pixiv.net usually thrive. For example, I don't see MoneyForward displacing Mint in the near future. I'm not knowledgeable in SIer/Government type services.
