What does a health information technology do?

As an information technology worker, do you ever worry about what digital technology, and the associated work culture, is doing to your health? If so, what are your thoughts?

  • What about your wellness, fitness, emotional or psychological well-being, etc.?  Or, dare I ask - sex appeal, charisma, social skills?  Are there concerns that you think IT workers share in this regard?

  • Answer:

It can be incredibly stressful given the pressures and unreasonable demands of some employers. If your personality is such that you can "leave work at work," then this won't be as bad. I found it to be really bad for me, so I moved on a few times and found a job that I really like. The only other part that kind of sucks is that family will expect free tech support for themselves and friends all of the time.

Other answers

Yes. Sitting for long periods is bad for your back and heart. Staring at computer screens is bad for your eyes. It used to be much worse years ago with flickering CRT monitors. Ozone from laser printers, chemicals from new plastics, carpets with flame retardants, air conditioning if not cleaned regularly, inadequate natural lighting, long working hours, loud open space offices, all of these are not good for your health. If you want to stay well and fit, you have to be careful. You need to find time for sports, outdoor activities, non-work related hobbies. Try to stay away from caffeine and sweets. They are so tempting when you need to concentrate on a difficult task, but you will pay for them with your health.
