How are inert gases used?

Can inert gases be used for fighter jets as fuel? If yes, what size should the fuel tank be?

  • Answer:

No. By definition, inert gases are non-reactive in most conditions and would not oxidize in order to be a useful fuel. Additionally, gases in general have a low energy density compared to liquids, which make much more suitable fuels.

As stated earlier, inert gasses are by nature not reactive. Therefore oxidizing them to get them to burn would consume more energy than you'd get out of this process, therefore making mundane.

The very fact that they are inert or "unreactive" renders them useless to be used as a fuel. A fuel's primary job is to undergo combustion (oxidation) and expand producing thrust. Inert gases do not react with oxygen from the air and thus cannot be used as a fuel. Infact, to avoid unnecessary reactions inert gases are employed..for eg in light bulbs.
