What is the "Minimum Wage" in Italy?

What prevents "local" minimum wage legislation? Can't cities pass popular laws that raise the minimum wage only within the city's jurisdiction?

  • It would seem that if the majority of voters residing in e.g., the city of Nashville want to raise the minimum wage for employment within the city limits, that should be doable. What specifically prevents this from happening? It seems more workable than raising the federally-mandated minimum wage. A $10 minimum wage in Hawaii is probably too low, but the same wage in North Dakota will cripple many businesses.  Why do some people believe that a central "standard" is the way to go, regardless of cost of living adjustments?

  • Answer:

Nothing prevents states from doing this.  In fact, minimum wage laws existed in the states for many years when a federal minimum wage was seen as unconstitutional.  Local minimum wage laws are possible to the extent they do not violate state law.   As a conservative, I have no problem with this occuring.  Some states have high income tax rates, some no income tax, some high sales tax, some none.  If I don't like what my town or state does I can move away, and if someone else really likes what they are doing they can move in.   Things tend to work their way out when people have choice in this way.  That's the problem with a one-size-fits-all federal approach.   You cannot as easily move to another country if the feds make a dumb decision.

Yes, they can pass local minimum wages both the cities of Seatac and Seattle have recently done so. So long as the local minimum wage is not lower than the federal minimum (which I think is a problem, if your town decides that the federal minimum wage is too high, shouldn't they be able to set it at whatever level they feel is appropriate?) In fact a local jurisdiction can pass very complicated minimum wage laws that only apply to certain types of businesses, or certain sizes of businesses.
