What are the 5 levels of sleep?

Why are my energy levels so low when I wake up early, even if I sleep anywhere from 5 to 13 hours?

  • Whenever I wake up early, I can't do anything after work. I just sit in my bed, I wish I could do sports but I'm exhausted. I can't set up a routine for myself. My health is perfect (as far as can be seen), I'm currently not depressed and I am only 23 yrs old.

  • Answer:

It took me a few weeks of pain - sticking to a daily routine of exercise in spite of my VERY low levels of energy. This would not have been sustainable if I didn't have hope that it would get better - but it did! After a few weeks (last time, then I "fell off the wagon") and only two weeks this time, suddenly I started waking up before my alarm went off at 6, after 7ish hours of sleep. And I have a high level of energy throughout the day (though I do get appropriately tired at 9:30pm or so). Before I would sleep 10 hours and still have low energy. Now I have my cake and eat it too - I sleep less (therefore have more time for exercise, other activities) and yet have MORE energy. I also stopped consuming almost all refined-sugar containing foods, caffeine, and alcohol, but other than that, just try to eat fairly healthily. So, the three keys: 1) Cut out most sugar/caffeine/alcohol 2) Establish a daily routine that includes exercise and gives you 7 or 8 hours of sleep with a CONSISTENT BEDTIME. 3) Stick to this routine IN SPITE OF THE PAIN for a few weeks, then I promise it'll get better - more energy, more time in your day. It's great on the other side, come on over! See you in a few weeks :)

Your body follows biological CYCLES, triggered by amount of sleep, time sleep, time of awakening, time of eating, time of exercising, etc.  If your habits are irregular and your TRIGGERS are always shifting, then your body will never adjust to be optimally ready for intellecual and physical activity. To give you an example of the effects of some cycles, for a normal person who, say, goes to bed at 10:30 PM and gets up at 6:30 AM, they should have a surge of Growth Hormones right around Midnight.  Their body should reach its lowest temperature of the day around 2 or 2:30 AM.  Then the body temperature gradually starts rising and there is a surge of cortisol and other hormones that starts around 4 to 6 AM.  Other things happen and continue through the day. The point is, all these things are to help get you ready for your various activities.  If your schedule gets discoordinated, then they get discoordinated, and you are never at your best or most physically or mentally capable. Following a regular schedule, even on weekends, is very important.
