What kind of antenna do I need to get over-the-air HDTV channels in Palo Alto?
-
I feel like I've tried everything, and nothing seems to work. AntennaWeb suggests that I should be able to get a bunch of channels from San Francisco within 30 miles (http://www.antennaweb.org/Stations.aspx?Address=&City=Palo+Alto&State=CA&ZIP=94301&Housing=S&Accuracy=4&Height=6&Obstructed=False&StationList=&Lat=37.4457966&Lon=-122.1575745). I've tried all three flavors of thin indoor antenna from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Ultra-Thin-Indoor-Antenna/dp/B00DIFIM36/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398740887&sr=8-1&keywords=hdtv+antenna+indoor), as well as an amplified Terk indoor directional antenna, pointed where AntennaWeb tells me to (http://www.amazon.com/Amplified-High-Definition-Antenna-Off-Air-Reception/dp/B0007MXZB2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1398740935&sr=8-1&keywords=terk+hdtva). I'm getting tired of buying things and shipping them back to Amazon! Has anybody had any luck doing this successfully in Palo Alto? Do I need to try for an outdoor antenna?

Answer:
Yes, always go for an outdoor antenna... Maybe your walls have chicken wire in them. Or just get basic cable and don't deal with it at all.

Who ever said that you can get the channels you want using an indoor antenna! If you get an antenna, make sure it has the maximum gain (some stores actually color code them using the same colors as http://antennaweb.org ) - Up to 50 miles (B00DIFIP06 antenna) - Up to 35 miles (B00DIFIO8E antenna) - Up to 25 miles (B00DIFIM36 antenna) The best antenna is of course a roof-top antenna. If roof-top antenna is impossible, put it as high up as possible (say, in the attic). ATSC transmission can be blocked by big buildings , even trees. After you get the antenna, use the HDTV's "signal optimizer" for the antenna to orient the antenna towards the SF towers. Correct positioning of ATSC antennas is extremely important even in "multi-directional antennas."

According to http://NoCable.org, it recommends the MohuLeaf 50 for that area. Have you tried any of the recommended Moho or Clearstream brands? http://nocable.org/compare-outdoor-antenna-reviews Do you have an obstructions between you and the direction of the towers? You can get a good general idea of the direction you should be pointing to based on the http://NoCable.org tester.
