What are rhetorical devices?

I think I ran out of things to learn about mechanics. Now what? Should I study rhetorical devices?

  • Yeah, cause I read the elements of style several times and got sick of it. Then I read some books I didn't finish, but knew most of what I saw in it. What is a good book that covers a massive volume of linguistic tricks I can use?

  • Answer:

Just start writing as much as you can. That's the best way to learn. Writing ten pages of stuff is better than reading a book about writing. You'll feel the constrictions of your prose and the thoughts that bind your writing from being the free flow it deserves to be. Even if you want to read a decent book about writing, I'd recommend Stephen King's On Writing. It has some good advice and doesn't try to shove rules down your throat. There are no hard rules, neither any shortcuts to writing.
