What is the average lifespan of a hard disk?

What is the longest lifespan of a functioning external hard disk drive (HDD)?

  • Currently functioning, as in, "Has been working for xx amount of years." Is there a record of this somewhere?

  • Answer:

One way to estimate this is to look at the MTBF spec for the drive.  The MTBF on a typical enterprise drive is about 150 years.  This means the drive has about a 37% chance of making it out to 150 years without failure.  Of course, this doesn't preclude it failing within the next five minutes either. Practically, I see consumer level, commodity external drives failing often in about 5 years.
