Best missionary college in the United States?

Why is college apparel not popular outside the United States other than college sports?

  • Even colleges in the US that don't have prominent college athletics see their students wear more college gear than students in Asia so I'd like to get insight into that and not anything having to do with the US college sports phenomenon.  As a clarification, I'm not interested in hearing about how US colleges are popular on clothing in foreign countries more so why there aren't tons of people sporting University of Beijing shirts around.

  • Answer:

There is a unique culture in the US, which is that when a child turns 18 and graduates from highschool, they leave home to go to college, often thousands of miles away, and begin their independent lives. They live on dorms, participate in college sports, and make life-long friends. College for US students is not just a place of learning; it influences their social, personal, emotional, and intellectual development for four years of their life, and the first four years of their adult life. This is a very significant experience, and US college graduates often associate with their colleges for the rest of their lives. This is not quite the same in Canada, Europe, or many parts of the world. In Canada and Europe, there are only a few Universities that are considered "top notch", while most others are reasonably good but not ranked on a tier system like that in the US. (This is most likely the result of a high taxed socialized government but let's not get into that here.) Hence, most kids live at home while attending class at a neighbouring University. Walk into any campus in Canada or Europe after 6pm, and you will find that the number of students roaming about is many times less than what you would find on a US college campus. In Asian countries, it's even more extreme: kids often don't leave home until they get married. Hence, in most non-US countries, there is less of a feeling of independence, of individual identity, that is associated with the college you go to.

College apparel is as popular in Canada as in the US.  I think what happens is that traditionally college in the US and Canada marks a sort of passage from family life to adulthood. College students tend to strongly identify themselves with the place and institution where that passage takes place. Wearing college apparel is just one manifestations of this. This has been going on for several generations now in Canada and the US, and sometimes by the time a student gets to college, the identification has run in the family for quite some time.

Maybe not the actual clothing and gear but I do think college apparel is kind of a big fashion influence in terms of clothes, looks and collections globally. You will find some sorte of "US College look" influence in a lots of brands and collections.
