What are some good ways to use social media to promote a music blog?

Much of this would depend on the exact nature of your music blog (e.g. are you writing about a particular style of music? about musicians? about musical equipment? about the business of the music industry? etc). But here are some off-the-cuff suggestions. Write some entries that offer a witty/clever/intelligent opinion on some hot topic, with the goal of having these get picked up by other blogs or people who will hopefully share it with their friends. This presupposes that you'll have plenty of buttons & links to allow readers to share your entries. Offer a giveaway of some kind (CD, MP3s, discount codes, etc) if readers tweet and share your URL, plus some catchy & relevant (and SEO-friendly) phrase about your blog. This method doesn't always earn repeat readers, however. Offer to write guest blog posts on other music blogs, whether they be direct competitors or related partners. Answer a bunch of Quora questions related to your topic. Include in your bio the name of your blog. Identify and follow a bunch of Twitter users who could be potential readers of your blog. Converse with them in a friendly, non-promotional manner, so you come across less as a selfish marketer and more as someone who is genuinely interested in your readers. Your tweets can also show off your expertise in your topic. Use a social media monitoring service like http://HootSuite.com, http://CoTweet.com, http://Radian6.com, http://Trackur.com, etc (there are TONS out there) to monitor certain keywords and people in your field. Over time, you may be able to identify influencers, potential partners, and even potential competitors. Here's a random idea: If applicable, create audio remixes and/or video mashups in your particular genre, and share them on http://YouTube.com and http://SoundCloud.com. The goal here is to get readers & listeners to share this unique content and earn more loyal readers.
