how to open a link in new tab in chrome extension?

How can I open a link in a foreground tab in Chrome using only the mouse?

  • Ideally, I could install some extension that adds an Open in Foreground Tab to the context menu for a link (this is the way Firefox does it).  I am aware of the Tabs to the Front and the Right Click Open Foreground Tab extensions for Chrome, but these completely override the right-click functionality to always open a foreground tab, and I want to maintain the ability to choose when to open in background vs. foreground.  Also, I'm already aware of how to do this using the keyboard, so don't answer with just that information.

  • Answer:

To open a link in a foreground tab using only the mouse, drag the link from the page up to the tabstrip either in empty space or between tabs - this will open the link in a new tab and focus it. You can also choose to drag it to an existing tab to open it there. For others looking for information about opening links in foreground tabs, holding the Shift key while Ctrl/Cmd+clicking or middle-clicking on a link will cause that link to be opened in a foreground instead of background tab.

Two Chromium developers implemented the extensions you have stated, there is currently no way to maintain foreground vs background. That is why there are extensions that allow an option to open it in foreground instead of background (which is the default)
