How old do you have to be to get into clubs in Germany?

Do clubs in Germany give fake excuses for why people can or cannot get in?

  • Answer:

Not necessarily. Often they'll just tell you that you cannot enter and not even tell you why. The more you ask why, the more it's likely that they'll remember you next time and not let you in again.

When I was a young boy at 21 I was sometimes told a party was "private". They were not. I was just a 21-year-old looking like 16 wanting - so the security guys were fine enough not to tell me the real reason. But I guess this is not very specific to Germany or any other country.

Some clubs might give a reason like "your party is too large" or "the club is full" in order to politely reject you or diffuse a situation (i.e. in the case you're trying to get into a club with a bachelor party of 15 screaming, drunk dudes). In Berlin it's a bit different. That's because clubbing in Berlin is a bit of a protected culture. The bouncer can look you over at the door and turn you away by saying nothing more than "Sorry, tonight isn't your night here". They don't need to give excuses, in fact they probably won't tell you why you were rejected. Regardless, never put up a fight. It's foul and you'll never win. As Cesar mentioned, accept graciously and take the rejection as an opening for a new opportunity in your night.

I have witnessed a lot of blatent racism in clubs in Germany. They usually dont give fake excuses. A fake excuse for anything or sugar coating the truth really isnt something Germans do in general. They either tell the truth, or they dont say anything.

When I lived in Munich a few years ago, I couldn't get into a lot of clubs. No racism in my case, I think I'm just too much of a nerd, when it comes to looks and clothes. Most of the time the only thing we got was just a "no, you can't get in". I always felt too embarrassed to argue. That being said, we always managed to have fun in clubs or at parties that were not as harsh in their judgement of us lovable nerds.  ;-)
