Are men more logical than women or are we the same?

Do men and women in general, have the same capacity for logic wired to our brains? Why are there more philosophers, mathematicians and computer logicians that are men than women? These are predominantly 'logical' subjects. Are logical skills of men better than women? Are women capable, but not preferring of these subjects because it's harder for women than it is for men? I know that so much of human history has been predominantly male dominated which means all the academics were men which explains why there is significantly higher inventors and philosophers and academics that were men than women. It's only nowadays where women have the same opportunities as men and yet still academia is dominated by men. However, maybe it might require some time for equilibrium ie all the societal baggage that is brought from history, and it's effects, to be neutralized. For example that women can't be engineers. But in let's say 50 years when social conditioning is truly a non factor, would we have an equal number of men and women in academia? If gender roles are all abolished and we become an androgynous culture where men and women aren't put into stereotypical roles nor is there any role for what a woman to be and what a man to be, do you think that in such a society we would have the same amount of mathematicians and logicians and computer programmers that are 50/50? I ask because a lot more women believe superstition and things like fate/serendipity/karma and fantasy/religion/wishful thinking of what they want reality to be like and how they want it to be....whereas more men think logically and do not buy into these ideas (a lot of them do, but those that don't, there are more of them than there are for the women's side) no matter how they wish for them to be true/maybe they don't have such an 'emotional' desire as such of a woman to believe these things(even if they want to). So in a hypothetical society of purely women's brains, vs purely men's brains (lets say that they could reproduce asexually), would each society have the same amount of progress in terms of technology/academia/philosophy or would one favor the other? As a disclaimer, I think that the women who tend more to be logical than have emotional thinking (thus not believing in superstition or fantasies), have their logic to dictate whats true or not whereas these emotional people may be guided by their emotion to believe what's true instead of the truth/logic. I think the women who are purely academic, such as women mathematicians, may have men's brains (are men's brains and women's brains and how its wired, any different?) or maybe these women that are so logical, may have more testosterone than estrogen, even with a woman's brain. One reason why (if true), I think men are more logical/smarter than women is because as men, we, as a species, had to keep using our brains whereas women didn't. In the past, men were the breadwinners, the hunters, the ones that constantly had to deal with the harshness with reality and therefore they couldn't be prone to emotional thinking or believing anything other than how reality works, otherwise they would lose out big time/be killed. For example, if you believe in Karma, as a tribe, you are going to be screwed over by another tribe. So men had to be logical and face reality head on whereas all women had to do was to do very simple tasks such as maintaining youthful appearance, household chores and taking care of the family as a support role. Also, since for men, on average, it's much harder to get laid by women(since women have more to lose ie 9 months of pregnancy vs 1 ejaculation and moving on, which men can do over and over again, sex is controlled by women, back in the days without the contraceptives, because of the 9 month investment that women had vs almost no consequences for that of a man. So women had to be very picky with whom them fornicate with), men had to innovate, compete with one another, invent, or do anything necessary to become the better man. I believe most of the activities that we do is because of the motivation of sex. Many of the greatest inventions and achievements of men were consciously or unconsciously motivated by sex (not all, but most. after all, that is our purpose for being here on earth so it makes sense that everything we do is to increase our survival and replication value). So because we always had to deal with reality and the environment to hunt, create and destroy and protect etc whilst also, competing with other men for the most sought after women, it creates a lot of competition which makes men grow intellectually. No matter how you get it, men want power/status and in this day and age, it's by money. So whether we are writers, inventors, scientists or intellectuals, we use our skills to get the money so that we can get the women whereas women don't need to do anything but to look beautiful and pleasing for the men(until recent times)/looking after the household as a support role which doesn't require alot of brainpower. I believe that humans are inherently emotional beings, we are driven by our emotions and we seek happiness. We are all emotional. However, women, who were traditionally the support roles and always were kept indoors/caves and doing petty things whereas men had to constantly battle with reality/the environment to survive and thrive, and, in later stages, after the agricultural revolution, when we had developed societies, we had to compete with other men for the 'best women' which were going to produce the best offspring and i believe that inventions as well as innovation and other things that men have created, as well as intellect/intelligence itself, were mere ways for us to woo women(being more intelligent and having great intellect means more chances of survival and a thriving lifestyle for their family/couple as well as dealing with reality. Nowadays it's the same but we have 'money' so with it, we can copulate with the 'best women'. So in a way, I have tried to answer my own question, IF IT IS TRUE, that men's brains are more logical than women's and or that women succumb more to their emotional side than the logical side, which is emotional/illogical by nature. For example, why believe in fate when it's wrong? Because the emotional person is guided by their emotions as a dictator for what they want to believe and for truth and that's why they keep believing in things like serendipity because it 'feels good' and 'it's how reality should work'. PS Brando, why is that that men have been taught to suppress their emotions? Why did this stereotype or gender role come about? there must have been a reason. They don't come out arbitrarily or randomly. There must be a reason that society has, from the ages, continued to believe and to support these gender roles and stereotypes. Possibly because the women were emotional/less logical then men? Because they were bad at mathematics/physics? Because logical facilities in the brain for women are less efficient/smaller than that of men and therefore it's harder for women to be good mathematicians? They CAN but maybe it's much harder for them. Just like long distance runners tend to be West African because the genetics made them easier.

Answer:
We differ in general in how we handle emotions, but thats not the same thing as not being logical. In fact, the science suggests that women are *more* logical about emotions then men are. The connectivity in the male brain is primarily from the emotional centers to the action centers, while in the female brain the emotional centers are more connected to the language and higher reasoning centers. Thats why men respond to emotions with physical actions, as a rule, while women respond by "processing" which includes talking them out. Men often think emotions are the opposite of logic, because in the male mind they generally are, but in the female mind this isn't true at all. As for your observation about careers, this has more to do with western sex-role bias then any innate capability. For a long time women were told they "shouldn't" or "couldn't" do sciences and math when nothing of the sort was true. In fact some of the greatest minds in science (Madame Curie) and mathematics (Ada Lovelace) have been women. Ms. Lovelace effectively invented computer programming. Can't get more logical then that.

If you believe women are more superstitious than men, you have obviously never been to a Boston Celtics game. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115851/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Of course women have as much capacity for logic as men. Asking why fewer women are mathematicians is like asking why more black people are poor. The inequalities don't derive from our DNA.

This. This is why there are less women in logic and science oriented fields, because inevitably some good ol' boy will look at us like we're some particularly fascinating two-headed bug. And when you figure out that it'll just keep happening for the rest of your career - well, self preservation is one hell of an instinct to fight, let me tell you.

Logic, like stupidity, does not depend on the gender of a person. But more on parenting, education, and society. Sometimes, though, it may not depend on any of these factors.

Women don't have the same opportunities. If you pay attention to science news, there are many articles documenting the sexism in science. I think (at least American) society still discourages women from science and technology mostly because of unfounded bias. I have worked with plenty of women and science and all seem to be part of an equally distributed brilliant - competent - incompetent spectrum to the men I have worked with.

Down through the ages, women were denied equal education, or none at all. Therefore, those females who may have excelled in these sciences were denied the chance to do so. I've also heard that dyscalculia ( unable to calculate ) is more common in females so you'll hear, " I hate math! " more from them than males.

I don't think it has anything to do with capacity, really. Men have always been taught to suppress their emotions and to think logically whereas women have historically been taught that they are SUPPOSED to be emotional. They are the "emotional core" of a family. This is changing though. Many women are very capable of being every bit as logical as men, or sometimes even more so. I DO think that women have one major thing working against them though. Whatever you might think of testosterone, women do have much more intense hormones working inside them. There's also their biological clock which can cause them to rush things or think irrationally to fulfill a "need". This doesn't remove their ability to think logically, it just makes it a little harder for them to think clearly every once in a while. And relating to emotion is not a bad thing at all as it allows you to get a better insight to other people's motivations.

It depends on a lot of aspects. First is education, on several countries men are educated to follow this path (sciences) while women is more educated on arts related studies. Also biology, science requires a kind of commitment that is hard to achieve when one become a mother, as the baby will require more attention than the career. Also similarly lonliness, a "nerd" boy will probably be what they call "forever alone", so they have lots of time to focus on the sciences, while even being "nerdy" a girl gets way more attention, so gets way more social interaction, taking time out of the pure studies. The biggest scientists usually did not have the most perfect "family record"... And in the end, as for "logical thinking" women do have PMS, what gives them some days every month being highly illogical :-)

Logic does not have anything to do with gender. It depends on the thinking ability of a human. In some situations or topics, men may be more logical and in other, women might.
