Are there any viable competitors to Comcast in the Minnesota Metro Area, in terms of high speed Internet providers?
-
I am currently investigating changing up my family's Internet service provider to reduce costs, but hopefully maintaining a comparable level of service (they have become hooked on Netflix, Hulu, and XBox Live, so we can't cut bandwidth too much). Qwest DSL is not available in my part of Dakota County, Verizon FiOS isn't in this part of the country, "Unlimited" Clear WiMax costs as much as Comcast (any may not be unlimited), and satellite Internet just isn't viable (very low bandwidth caps, limited bandwidth, costs as much as Comcast, but I get less). Are there any other providers or service avenues I am missing out on? Is T1 financially viable for home use? Are there smaller DSL providers I don't know about?

Answer:
You might check to see if Charter is available in your area, as they seem to be the only competitor available with similar speeds as Comcast. More data available on the St. Paul NetIndex page: http://www.netindex.com/download/4,504/Saint-Paul/?tab=1

I have been using Clear (http://clear.com) for two months. Home and office both (Edina). For $50/month (no taxes) you get a small box that serves as a wireless high-speed hotspot you can take anywhere. So far no complaints, although I am yet to try streaming video.

Have you tried comparing cable, fiber optic or DSL providers by zip code? This can be done online, and can save you a lot time and hassle. There are comparison sites which will translate speed into activity (i.e. "Package 1 lets you use Hulu and Netflix in addition to regular internet surfing"), which can make it much easier to sort out. This is a site I've used in the past which really helped me: http://www.high-speed-internet-service-providers.com/dsl-providers.html. Hope it helps you too!

Check on who the phone company is if not Qwest. For example, Frontier Communications serves part of Dakota County and they might have an option.
